Standard Drink
A standard drink, or one alcoholic drink equivalent, is a measure of alcohol consumption representing a fixed amount of pure alcohol (ethanol) in a drink. This measure helps individuals understand and compare the alcohol content in various drinks.

However, standard drink sizes can differ between countries, so it's essential to be aware of local definitions when assessing alcohol intake.

For example, according to HealthHub SG, a standard drink contains 10g of pure ethanol, while a standard drink in the UK has 8g of ethanol and 14g of ethanol in the US.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
ABV, short for Alcohol by Volume, is a standard measurement used to express the alcohol content in a beverage as a percentage. It is defined as the number of milliliters (ml) of ethanol present in 100 ml of a specific alcoholic beverage.

For example, if a bottle of wine has an ABV of 12%, it means there is 12 ml of ethanol per 100ml of wine in that bottle.

Think of the Standard Drinks Calculator as a ‘converter’ that lets you compare apples with apples! In Singapore, a “standard drink” is defined as containing 10 grams of pure alcohol (ethanol). Because alcoholic drinks come in different strengths and sizes, converting alcoholic drinks into “standard drinks” helps you compare them.

You can calculate the number of standard drinks by multiplying the volume of the beverage (measured in milliliters) by the percentage of alcohol a drink contains, its ABV (or Alcohol by Volume), and then dividing the result by 12.7. Why 12.7?
Because 10 grams is roughly the weight of 12.7 ml of pure alcohol!
